In this issue of Saga Magazine : At this time of year, we all start hoping for an Indian summer. The one thing you can rely on to brighten up this month, however, is the September issue of Saga Magazine. It’s packed with fascinating features, such as our interview with cover star Jamie Oliver, who has been travelling the world to investigate longevity. His recipe for a long, happy life has some surprising ingredients: as well as identifying the superfoods we should all be eating, Jamie found that countries brimming with nonagenarians and centagenarians have a much healthier attitude to the elderly. It’s fighting talk, and food for thought indeed. Also in feisty form are the early activists of the UK’s environmental movement: we meet some founders of Greenpeace UK and the Green Party and ask whether their ideals were sustainable.

One youthful passion that definitely seems to stand the test of time is motorcycling. Three born-again bikers, who like many others have rekindled their love affair in middle-age, share their transports of delight. From the joys of the open road to the wonders of outer space: as a new exhibition explores the Soviet space mission, we reveal how the cosmonauts made giant leaps in the space race but faltered at the final frontier and never got to make that one small step.

A milestone closer to home is the fact that this month the Queen will beat Victoria to become our longest-serving monarch: we take a light-hearted look at how Britain has changed since she came to the throne in 1952. And you also get the chance to meet our new CEO Lance Batchelor, the ex-Royal Navy submariner steering Saga plc steady-as-she-goes into the future.

All that, as well as Lynne Truss’s wit and Paul Lewis’s wisdom, just part of our unrivalled regular coverage of the arts, finance, health, gardening, food and drink, travel, money-saving special offers and all the things that matter to you.
