In this issue of The Lady : It is a truth universally acknowledged, to paraphrase
Jane Austen, that a lady should never toot
her own horn. But surely one can make the odd
exception. For I’d like to use this letter to thank
both the wonderful staff here at The Lady – and
you, our loyal readers.
The Lady, you see, is in rather fi ne fettle. Despite
facing particularly turbulent conditions in
the magazine market, we are attracting new
readers and picking up subscribers. As we approach
year’s end, we have also been nominated
for three prestigious industry awards.
As well as being shortlisted for the British
Society of Magazine Editors Editor of the
Year gong (women’s weeklies), which we won
last year, we are also up for the Editor and
Consumer Magazine of the Year titles at the PPA’s Independent
Publisher awards. If all goes well, by Christmas, we’re going to
need a bigger mantelpiece.
Either way, the magazine’s rising fortunes come down to the
sterling work of the staff here in Bedford Street and our many passionate
readers, who never hesitate to tell me exactly what they
think – and how this 129-year institution can become even better.
To all of you, a hearty and heartfelt thank you.
End of horn toot.
Very best wishes,
